Phoenix Zoo

When the Phoenix Zoo decided to relocate its administrative offices from Tempe to the Phoenix Zoo Campus, they selected WOODPATEL to provide survey, civil engineering, and construction inspection services. This unique project consisted of three separate structures linked through a series of roof and wall elements. Challenges to this development included maintaining positive drainage and ADA accessibility over a very steep site. The design team overcame these challenges by utilizing the existing grade where possible for drainage while using ramps and retaining walls where necessary.

WOODPATEL has since completed many fascinating exhibits and much-needed utility improvement projects at the Phoenix Zoo. We have been involved in the design processes from preliminary design through final approval. The unique nature of each exhibit required close collaboration with the out-of-state design team, contractor, Phoenix Zoo, and City of Phoenix personnel to achieve the vision of improving people’s lives through interaction with nature and excelling in conservation, education, exhibition, and recreation.
