WOODPATEL served as the Civil Engineer for this $95 million U.S. Courthouse in downtown Phoenix. The entire project covers two city blocks, has 550,000 square-feet, and includes below-ground parking for 160 vehicles. Within the courthouse, a public atrium features a dramatic six-story glass curtain-wall on the north face. The courthouse also contains a drum-shaped special proceedings courtroom with a glass-lens ceiling. WOODPATEL’s scope of work included assessing the public infrastructure’s ability to serve the project, abandonment of public utilities and design of new infrastructure including water, sanitary sewer, storm drains / catch basins and widening of the public roadways surrounding the site. Integration of security measures unique to a Federal Courthouse was an important goal. Civil engineering related opportunities included elevating the first floor two feet above the public roadways while accounting for ADA accessibility challenges. Special design considerations included design of a protective barrier to limit vehicle access to the building.
